In Abraham Joseph’s village at Mannamplackal in Kerala, the farmers face acute shortage of water only during the months of April and May. Buying an electric motor for just two months is an unnecessary expense. In fact, an electric motor with a compressor needed for lifting water from a bore well costs around Rs.15,000. This problem prompted Abraham Joseph to develop the low-cost technology. Here a PVC pipe fixed with a foot valve is used. Since the diameter of a PVC pipe can be small, it is very easy to immerse it in the bore well (We cannot use a bucket in the bore well for lifting water due to its narrowness). The presence of the foot valve at the bottom will prevent the return flow of water. The PVC pipe can be dipped into the bore well, and just like the ordinary method of using pulley and rope, water can be drawn upto 5 litres at a time from a PVC tube tied to a rope and over a pulley. He got a consolation award at NIF in the last round. |
